About Andrea Matus
Art is a conversation—between past and present, materials and meaning, instinct and intention. I’ve spent my life chasing the tension between precision and spontaneity, layering elements that shouldn’t belong together but somehow do. My work fuses painting, collage, illustration, assemblage, and sculptural forms, each piece a portal into a world where myth, history, and contemporary culture converge.
I have always been drawn to the weight of symbols—the way an ancient motif, a forgotten portrait, or a discarded fragment can echo something deeply personal yet universally felt. My work explores themes of femininity, resilience, and transformation, weaving together influences as varied as Klimt’s ornamentation, Dalí’s surrealism, Art Nouveau design, and the graphic elegance of fashion photography. A Renaissance flourish might sit beside a burst of pop art color, and a hand-drawn figure may emerge from layers of ephemera, as if surfacing from another time.
At the heart of my practice is a relentless curiosity—about art, about history, about the evolving relationship between technology and creativity. I am fascinated by how ideas shape the world and how materials tell stories. Whether constructing optical collages that play with transparency and depth, embedding sculptural elements into my compositions, or exploring new techniques in mixed media, my work exists in a space between worlds—where the past is reimagined, the present is layered with meaning, and the future is left to interpretation.
I share my creative life with my husband, artist Michael deMeng, whose sculptural storytelling transforms found objects into richly layered assemblages. While our artistic paths intertwine, we each cultivate a distinct voice—his, a deep dive into the beautifully bizarre; mine, an exploration of narrative, symbolism, and portraiture.
My work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Australia. I also teach workshops worldwide, guiding students through my approach to layered media and visual storytelling. If you’d like to explore more, I offer select commissions and regularly host immersive workshops for artists of all levels.
As a Golden Artist Educator, Andrea takes pride in combining her geeky nature with lots of experimentation while ensuring she is following "best practices" both in the studio and in the classroom.
